The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Aisha Garba, has sounded the alarm over what she calls a “crisis of great magnitude” in Nigeria’s education sector. Speaking at a high-level meeting in Abuja, co-hosted by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and UBEC, she cited the staggering figure of 20 million out-of-school children and rising learning deficits, where many children in school still lack basic literacy and numeracy.
Dr. Garba unveiled the $552 million HOPE-EDU programme, a partnership with the World Bank and Global Partnership for Education, aimed at addressing these issues.
She urged stakeholders to act urgently. Officials agreed the dialogue was a turning point toward lasting reform in Nigeria’s basic education.
