The Federal Government has rejected a U.S. proposal to accept deported foreign nationals, calling it unrealistic and against Nigeria’s socio-economic and security interests.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Kimiebi Ebienfa, told Vanguard that unlike Rwanda, Eswatini, and South Sudan, Nigeria will not bow to pressure.
He said accepting deportees, including prisoners, would place an undue burden on the nation. Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar had earlier condemned the policy, stressing Nigeria already faces enough domestic challenges.
The move comes amid recent U.S. visa restrictions for Nigerians, reducing most non-immigrant visas to single-entry permits valid for three months.
