Grammy-winning Nigerian Afropop star Tems has spoken out about gender inequality in the music industry, saying women are often not taken seriously.
In an interview with the BBC, the 2023 Grammy winner revealed she refused to pay the price often demanded of women in the male-dominated scene.
Tems, who has faced body-shaming online, stressed the importance of authenticity, rejecting industry pressure to change her sound or style.
She also launched The Leading Vibe Initiative to create opportunities for young African women in music, promising to make it easier for them to access platforms, wider audiences, and success.
