On The Foreign Scene
Arab mediators are waiting for Israel’s response after Hamas agreed to a new ceasefire and hostage release proposal.
The plan, presented by Qatar and Egypt, is nearly identical to a U.S.-backed deal calling for a 60-day truce. Under it, about half of the 50 hostages believed to be in Gaza would be freed, while talks for a lasting ceasefire continue.
However, Israel has repeatedly said it will only accept a comprehensive deal securing the release of all hostages and meeting its conditions, including the disarming of Hamas and new governance in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also signaled preparations for a full military offensive on Gaza City, where strikes have already displaced thousands.
Meanwhile, families of Israeli hostages are pressing their government to accept the proposal, warning that renewed fighting could endanger their loved ones.
