The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned key commissioners and government officials to appear before it over rising flood disasters across the state.

The decision followed widespread flooding triggered by persistent rainfall and rising water levels from the River Niger, which submerged houses, markets, business premises, and farmlands in several flood prone communities.

Areas worst affected include Ogbaru, Idemili North, and Oyi local government areas, with major markets such as Relief Market, Ochanja Market, Building Materials Market, Ogidi, and parts of Onitsha severely impacted.

Videos circulating online showed submerged roads, vehicles, and houses, with residents, including women and children, wading through floodwaters, while reports indicated that two persons were missing and feared drowned at the Building Materials Market, Ogidi.

Findings from affected communities showed that many families had been displaced and forced to seek refuge in upland areas, as residents called for urgent government intervention over the economic and social damage caused by the flooding.

Following the development, the Assembly resolved during plenary to invite the Commissioner for Environment, Clem Aguiyi, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Okey Ezeobi.

They are expected to appear before the lawmakers on Thursday, June 25, 2026, by 2 pm.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the growing dangers posed by flooding, noting that blocked drainages, poor environmental practices, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse have worsened the situation, especially in commercial cities such as Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka.

The Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, said the resolution would help address flooding challenges in the state, stressing that it is the duty of lawmakers to protect the lives and property of Ndi Anambra.
