Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Nollywood actor turned politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, as spokesperson for his 2027 presidential campaign.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo openly criticised the choice of Rotimi Amaechi as the party vice presidential candidate, arguing that selecting a running mate from the South South would further deny the South East the opportunity to produce a president.

Okonkwo had maintained that the South East has remained excluded from the presidency since 1999 and warned that the decision could deepen what he described as the continued marginalisation of the region.

Confirming the appointment, Atiku spokesperson, Paul Ibe, said the decision was made by the Waziri Adamawa after internal consultations within the party.

Announcing the development on his social media platforms, Okonkwo expressed appreciation to Atiku for the trust placed in him, describing the appointment as a demonstration of dialogue, tolerance, and democratic values within the party.

He noted that discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress addressed concerns surrounding the South East, adding that assurances were given despite challenges created by the Electoral Act 2026 and prevailing political realities.

Okonkwo also acknowledged the roles played by Kashim Imam, Ralphs Nwosu, and Ekene Onwuka, crediting them for their contributions toward strengthening the party and assembling a strong campaign structure ahead of the 2027 election.

He further thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their encouragement and prayers as he assumes the new responsibility, expressing optimism about contributing to a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria.
