The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, has cordoned off fallen high-tension poles affected by flooding in Awka to avert potential disaster and protect lives and property.
Following the heavy rainfall on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, several high-tension electricity poles along the Awka-Onitsha Express Road, within the Aroma – Old Government House section of the road, were affected.
According to a statement issued by the Head, Media and Tactical Operations,: NSCDC Anambra State Command, SC Edwin Okadigbo,
He said on receipt of the distress report, operatives of the Command were swiftly deployed to the affected location to barricade the area, restrict public access and prevent electrocution and other hazards.
The State Commandant, Commandant Maku Olatunde, said the proactive measure was in line with the Corps’ mandate to protect Critical National Assets and Infrastructure and to ensure public safety.
The NSCDC state helmsman stated that the Command has alerted the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for prompt action, repair and restoration of the affected facility to eliminate the danger posed to the public.
He warned residents to avoid the cordoned area and to steer clear of fallen power lines, noting that they remain highly dangerous even when there appears to be no power supply. Commandant Maku assured that operatives of the Command will maintain surveillance in the area to forestall vandalism of the fallen assets while awaiting EEDC’s technical intervention.
He urged Ndi Anambra to promptly report any fallen pole, exposed cables or flood-related threats to critical infrastructure to the Corps for immediate response.
Meanwhile, the Command has issued a flood alert, cautioning members of the public not to go outside during heavy rainfall, especially when flooding is already occurring.
The Command advised that staying indoors and avoiding flooded roads, drainage channels and fast-moving water remains one of the simplest and most intentional precautions to take.
It further stated that when rainfall becomes heavy, residents should stay safe, stay indoors and wait for the water to recede, rather than risk their lives trying to prove courage where caution is required.
