NLC Ultimatum: Fed. Govt. Calls For Balance Between Labour’s Demands And Government’s Financial Capacity

The Federal Government has called for a balance between workers’ demands for improved wages and the government’s financial capacity amid workers’ agitation and tensions over petrol prices, economic hardship and the national minimum wage.

The appeal comes as the two-week ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), approaches its deadline. NLC is demanding a reduction in petrol prices and the commencement of fresh minimum wage negotiations.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the appeal on Monday in Abuja at the board retreat of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr Abubakar Kana, said wage decisions must reflect prevailing economic realities, while safeguarding workers’ welfare.

He stressed the need for the commission to consider workers’ legitimate expectations alongside the financial constraints facing the government and the broader objectives of national economic development.

“The commission must continually balance the legitimate expectations of workers with the fiscal realities of government and broader imperatives of national economic development,” he pointed out.

The government’s position comes following renewed pressure from organised labour for measures to ease the financial burden on Nigerian workers, particularly in the wake of rising living costs and concerns over petrol prices.

The NLC’s ultimatum has heightened expectations for engagement between the Federal Government and labour unions to address workers’ demands and prevent a further escalation of industrial tension.

The commission, which plays a key role in salary and income policy, is expected to help shape decisions on public-sector remuneration in line with prevailing economic conditions and government resources.

The outcome of the discussions and negotiations between the government and organised labour remains critical to industrial relations in the coming days as workers await positive responses to their demands.
