Country Club, Fegge, Onitsha, and Anambra Sports Club, Awka, have emerged finalists in the maiden Anambra Governor’s Cup Tennis Tournament after recording impressive victories in their respective semi-final matches held on Friday, October 30, 2026.
In the first semi-final, Emeka Ewulu, representing Onitsha Country Club, Fegge, defeated Ugochukwu Onyia of Elite Tennis Club, Onitsha, in straight sets, winning 6–0, 6–2 to secure his club’s place in the final. In the second semi-final, Rev. Fr. Peter Andrew Ibeazor of Anambra Sports Club, Awka, also produced an impressive performance, defeating Albert Anyaele of City Sports Club, Awka, 6–1, 6–2 to book the second finalist’s spot.
The victories set up an exciting final encounter between Emeka Ewulu of Onitsha Country Club, Fegge, and Rev. Fr. Peter Andrew Ibeazor of Anambra Sports Club, Awka, scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at the tennis court of Anambra Country Club, Awka, where the overall champion will be decided.
Speaking after the semi-final matches, National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sly Ezeokenwa, Esq., commended the participating clubs for displaying good sportsmanship and promoting healthy competition. He also applauded Audi Company Limited, the major sponsor of the tournament, for its commitment to sports development in Anambra State, while appreciating Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his vision and investment in sports infrastructure, particularly the development of Anambra Country Club.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, described sports development as an important component of Governor Soludo’s agenda for building a livable and prosperous Anambra State. She appreciated Audi Company Limited for supporting the administration’s vision through its sponsorship and participation in the maiden Governor’s Cup Tennis Tournament.
Also speaking, President of Anambra Country Club, Awka, Ozo Ejiamatu Damian Enekwechi, expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo for developing the club’s facilities to a standard capable of hosting sporting competitions at local, national and international levels. He assured that the club would continue to host more sporting events, noting that its facilities are equipped for activities including tennis, swimming and table tennis.
The maiden Governor’s Cup Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Audi Company Limited, has brought together participating clubs from across Anambra State, providing a platform for sporting excellence, talent development, healthy competition and stronger relationships among sports clubs.
