The Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONet), a citizens advocacy group, has called on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to sign the recently passed ANSIEC Bill into law.

The demand was made in a statement by ACSONet’s head, Prince Chris Azor. According to Azor, the Anambra State House of Assembly has taken a significant step towards strengthening democracy by passing the ANSIEC Bill. This crucial legislation, introduced as an executive bill, aims to ensure the independence and effectiveness of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

The bill empowers the Commission to conduct local government elections in the state.

Azor said that the citizens of Anambra State, urge Governor Chukwuma Soludo to sign the ANSIEC Bill into law without further delay. He emphasized that this law will enhance the credibility and transparency of local government elections, empower ANSIEC to conduct free and fair elections, strengthen democratic institutions in the state, and foster sustainable development.

The group also appealed to Governor Soludo to fulfill his promise by constituting the ANSIEC body with a Chairman, Secretary, and Commissioners. This, they say, would help build a stronger, more democratic Anambra State.

Recall that last week, the Anambra State House of Assembly passed the bill to establish the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, marking a significant milestone in the state’s democratic journey.
