Despite several warnings from the Nigeria Police and other security agencies, the March 18 Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections that held in different states in the country did not go hitch free as expected.
Compared to the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly Elections where the Independent National Electoral Commission Officals came late to polling units and sketchy issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System ,BVAS in a few places, INEC officials were early in almost all polling units but faced voter apathy as lots of people did not turn out to exercise their franchise.
Last Saturday’s election was also marred with political violence, thuggery and ballot snatching as touts locally called agberos allowed themselves to be used to perpetrate crime . A few deaths were also recorded in some parts of the country like Lagos, Rivers , Benue etc.
Nigerian governors are some of the country’s influential stakeholders and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections are strongholds where the governors tend to hold down to enable them fulfill their mandates in their respective states .
Some people have termed the 2023 elections as the worst in the country in along while. Many people had hopes that their voters card which is their right to choose credible leaders was going to be a deciding factor but the events of last Saturday has left many wondering what realky needs to give way for a better Nigeria.
