There was a heated exchange at the Senate Committee on Ethics hearing on Tuesday as Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi and former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili traded insults. The clash erupted after a petitioner, Zubairu Yakubu, questioned the neutrality of the committee in handling a case involving Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Tensions escalated when Ezekwesili insisted on being heard, prompting Nwaebonyi to call her a “fool,” while she fired back, calling him a “hooligan.” The argument briefly disrupted proceedings before order was restored.
Senator Patrick Ndubueze urged calm, while the committee chairman, Neda Imasuen, later adjourned the hearing indefinitely. Ezekwesili later criticized the Senate’s handling of petitions, warning that prioritizing Senate rules over the Constitution could undermine democracy.
