Anambra Assembly Summons State Officials Over Alleged Killing By Anti-Tout Squad

Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned various officials including the Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, the leadership of the Anti-touting Squad, Onitsha Zone, Special Advisers to the Governor on Market and Security, as well as the Chairman of Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, over the killing of one Mr. Arinze Obunadike by members of the Anti-touting outfit and Market Security at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha.
The motion, moved under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by the member representing Ihiala Two Constituency, Mr Golden Iloh, aims to address speculations surrounding the killing.
The lawmaker noted that Mr. Obunadike, a resident of Iyiowa in Ogbaru Council Area, and a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who was an apprentice at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, was reportedly killed on February 16, 2024.
Iloh emphasized the need for discreet investigation to dispel tension and ensure responsibility.
Supporting the motion, the member representing Ogbaru One constituency, Mr. Noble Igwe, expressed sorrow over the incident and stressed the need for urgent handling of issues concerning the operations of the Anti-touting squad.
Similarly, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Mr. Augustine Ike and his Onitsha South One counterpart, Mr. Fredrick Ezenwa, condemned the incident as avoidable tragedy.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, said the summoned officials should appear before the House Committee on Homeland and Boundary Matters on February 22, to clarify the matter.
In a similar development, a bill for a law to establish the health facility monitoring and accreditation agency 2024, and a bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of touting and related activities in all sectors in Anambra State passed the second reading.
The bills were sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Ikenna Ofodeme.
