Anambra Government Intensifies Crackdown On Child Begging, Targets Syndicates Behind Exploitation

In a decisive move to combat child begging in Anambra State, the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in partnership with the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), conducted a targeted raid at the Aroma under bridge area. This operation is part of a broader effort to address the persistent issue of child exploitation in the state.
During the raid, 16 children were rescued from the streets and handed over to the Ocha Brigade for the purpose of tracing and reuniting them with their parents or guardians. The action underscores the state’s commitment to eradicating child begging, which has become a growing concern despite the provision of free basic education by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, expressed her dismay over the exploitation of school-age children, who are being used as beggars and petty thieves by unscrupulous individuals. She affirmed that the Anambra State government will not tolerate such activities and is determined to bring those responsible to justice. Mrs. Obinabo also hinted at similar operations being planned across the state to curb the menace.
Mr. Ossy Onuko, Managing Director of ACTDA, revealed that the authorities had previously warned beggars and other miscreants to vacate the city through various media channels, but these warnings were ignored. He emphasized that the government is resolved to identify and prosecute not only the individuals exploiting these children but also the syndicates orchestrating these activities. The raid is part of an ongoing initiative to cleanse key governmental zones and other parts of the Awka Capital Territory of illegal activities.
This joint effort by the Anambra State government agencies marks a significant step towards protecting vulnerable children and upholding their right to education and a better future.
