The Anambra State Government has closed over 30 illegal health facilities operated by unqualified individuals to safeguard residents’ health.

Dr. Afam Obidike, the State Commissioner for Health, announced this at the 2024 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Chapter, during the 5th Prof. Festus Nwako Memorial Lecture.

Dr. Obidike highlighted that under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, the State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency was established to combat quackery and eliminate illegal medical services.
He emphasized the severity of quackery, revealing that these unauthorized operators, who were not medical doctors, performed surgeries and endangered lives for profit.

The Commissioner appealed to the NMA to collaborate with the state government to eradicate quackery, improve life expectancy, and prevent untimely deaths.

He also noted the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery through the construction, renovation, and equipping of public hospitals and the recruitment of health workers to increase access to health services.
