The popular Uwamgbede and Shoe Site Markets in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State were on February 15, 2024, sealed off by the State Government due to inability of the traders and market leaders to maintain Clean and healthy environment.

The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu while on inspection visit to the markets, frowned at the state of the environment in the market.

He therefore charged the market leaders and traders to take ownership of the environment; form a sustainable waste management system to maintain a clean, green, liveable and healthy environment for their daily markets activities.

The Commissioner added that every shop owner must be provided with waste bin for easy waste disposal to curb illegal disposal of waste into the drainage.

He also stressed the need for active monitoring and enforcement to ensure proper waste management system in the markets.

Furthermore, Dr Odimegwu emphasized the importance of regular distilling of drainage for easy flow of water thereby limiting flooding.

In response, the market leaders mobilized their members and commenced instant evacuation of waste and distilling of drainages.

In their comments, the Chairmen of Uwamgbede and Shoe Site Markets, Chief Obi and Chike Ezeani, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental strides, especially in making Anambra environment habitable and ease in doing business.

They also appealed to the State Government to provide a modern public toilet facility in the market.

Moreover, Dr Odimegwu thanked the officers of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade) for their selfless and rapid response in seeing to the sealing of the markets and the traders, instantly complying with the directive to evacuate waste and desilt the drainages.
