The Anambra Police Command has attributed the escape of two suspects connected to the murder of Justice Azuka, a lawmaker in the state, to “operational lapses.”
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, made this disclosure during a news briefing in Awka on Friday. He assured the public that the police were prioritizing the re-arrest of the suspects, as well as implementing measures to prevent future security breaches. Orutugu explained that the escape occurred two days before he assumed office on February 10. Following an investigation, it was revealed that the incident took place on February 8 in Obosi.
The suspects, Ikemefuna Ossai from Delta and Chinedu Okoli from Imo, were not the main perpetrators of the crime but had been assisting police operatives in the apprehension of Tochukwu Akolisa, a suspect linked to stolen vehicles. During an operation to apprehend Akolisa, the two suspects managed to escape from a police vehicle in a chaotic situation, despite efforts by police to recapture them. The police chief emphasized that they were actively pursuing the escapees but had yet to locate them.
