Anambra State Government has advised the citizenry on proper wearing of face mask.
A release signed on behalf of the State Government by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, observed that since wearing of face coverings in public became compulsory in Anambra State as part of the strategy to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, a growing number of people have been complying with the directive.
He described it as a good development.
Information Commissioner however, stated that the state government has noted that the face masks are often not worn appropriately.
He observed that that there are people who wear theirs on the chins, the jaws, or even wear the face masks to cover their mouths but not their nostrils, pointing out that none of these practices is proper.
Mr Adinuba made it clear that face mask must always cover the mouth and the nose.
He said this is because coronavirus enters the system through such orifices as the eye, the nostril and the mouth, which is why some people wear not just face masks which cover their mouths and noses, but also face shields which cover their eyes, in addition.
The Information Commissioner explained that the compulsory and proper adorning of face masks in public places in Anambra State is done in the interest of every individual in the state.
He restated the fact that COVID-19 is real, and has killed nine persons in the state as well as a number of Anambra individuals outside the state.
Commissioner Adinuba further stressed that the victims include old people and youths of both genders.
He declared that Anambra State government does not want more of her people to get infected by this highly contagious disease, let alone die of it.
He warned that consequently, the government is establishing mobile courts in different parts of the state to try those who contravene the new law on COVID-19 like individuals who do not wear face coverings or do not wear them properly.
The Commissioner revealed that the punishments for defaulters include payment of up to 10,000 naira fine and performance of community service.
He asserted further that to check the spread of the coronavirus and ensure that Anambra remains the safest state in Nigeria, including in health matters, ndi Anambra are reminded, once again, of the importance of keeping social distancing of six feet, wash thei hands frequently with soap, water and sanitizer, avoid handshakes and embraces and, of course wear face masks the right way anytime they are in public, for Anambra State and her people to continue to be The Light of the Nation.
