Governor Willie Obiano has directed the Anambra State Ministry of Trade and Commerce to reopen the Agbedo Spare Parts Market, Nnewi.
The market was closed last Saturday, February 6, 2021, for flagrant and constant violations of the protocols on the check of the coronavirus and the law on the control of infectious diseases in Anambra State.
It was reported that neither the traders nor customers were wearing face coverings, and were not also observing social or physical distancing.
They did not provide buckets of water, soaps or sanitizers in the market for frequent washing of hands.
The nonchalant attitude of officials of the market union, obviously led to a huge spike in the number of COVID-19 infections in Nnewi since this year, leading to government shutting down the market to save the State and its residents from avoidable hardship and deaths.
However since the closure, there have been much pleas from stakeholders, including the leadership of the market unions in the state, who have approached the authorities to tamper justice with mercy.
They have further pledged to comply religiously with the protocols and also discipline defaulters to check the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
To this end, state government has examined the whole situations and directed that the market be reopened.
A release signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, warned all stakeholders against abusing Governor Obiano’s compassionate decision.
According to the release, State Government will not hesitate to shut down the market or any other market which contravenes the protocols to check COVID-19 pandemic.
He noted that the health and safety of the people remain supreme.
