The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, COOUTH, Amaku-Awka, will initiate the disposal of abandoned corpses from its morgue dating back to 2014. This was made known by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Henrietta Agbai, in a statement released over the weekend on behalf of COOUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Josephat Akabuike, and the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Mba.

Agbai stated that Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has sanctioned the disposal of abandoned corpses at COOUTH.

The statement emphasized that COOUTH intends to conduct mass burials for the abandoned corpses accumulated in its mortuary from 2014 to December 2023.

Agbai urged individuals with missing relatives to visit the hospital’s mortuary for possible identification and collection of such corpses within one month of this announcement.

COOUTH Amaku-Awka, serves as a primary center for health emergencies in and around the state capital, particularly for cases involving road accidents, gunshot injuries, and other medical emergencies. The influx of critical cases over the years has led to the overloading of the hospital’s morgue with unidentified corpses dating as far back as 2014.
