Anambra State Sports Development Commission Kicks Off ANSSI, Inaugurates Organizing Committee

Awka, February 6, 2025 – The Anambra State Sports Development Commission has inaugurated the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) for the Anambra School Sports Initiative (ANSSI), setting the stage for an exciting inter-school sports competition across the state.

The inauguration, which took place at the conference hall of the Commission, was led by the Chairman, Hon. Patrick Estate Onyedum, who charged the committee to ensure the smooth execution of the competition. He praised the efforts of stakeholders, including public, private, and missionary schools, for their contributions to past editions of the event.

According to information released by the MOC, the competition will kick off at the community level on March 19, 2025. The local government-level contests will follow from May 7 to May 9, 2025, while the zonal and state finals are scheduled for June 11-13 and June 17-20, 2025, respectively.

The competition will feature 11 sports, including:

  • Athletics
  • Ayo
  • Basketball
  • Chess
  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Scrabble
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Taekwondo
  • Volleyball

Registration for participating schools begins immediately and will close on March 14, 2025. A press conference is scheduled for March 13, 2025, to provide further details on the competition.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike, the Chairman of Aguata Local Government Areaand Chairman of all Local Government Chairmen in Anambra, commended the Sports Commission for organizing the school sports initiative. He pledged to mobilize support among local government chairmen to ensure the success of the competition.

He acknowledged the financial challenges faced by public schools in participating and promised to rally support to assist them.

Similarly, Comrade Romanus Ibekwe, Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area, expressed his commitment to supporting the initiative. He assured that he would engage stakeholders to encourage participation and ensure that schools in his jurisdiction fully embrace the program.

The newly inaugurated ANSSI Main Organizing Committee consists of the following members:

  10. Rev. Fr. Callistus Nworgu– Mission Schools Representative
  11. Mr. Onwuka Dibian– Public Schools Principals Representative
  12. Hon. Ken Okoli – ASATU Youth Leader
  13. Mr. Ikedi Udeaja – Education Sector Representative

With preparations now in full swing, the Anambra School Sports Initiative (ANSSI) is set to bring renewed energy to school sports, fostering talent development and promoting healthy competition among students across the state.
