The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala, has revealed that the state would enroll at least 28,246 vulnerable residents into a special health fund through the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA).
Dr Okpala, who disclosed this while flagging off the Universal Health Coverage Day celebration, in his office, said the project which is already on, was targeting pregnant women, children below 5 years, people living with disabilities and others across all political wards in the state.
According to him, on December 11 this year, he chaired an inaugural meeting of Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) state oversight meeting which marked the official transition from BHCPF State Steering Committee to State Oversight Committee.
The Commissioner intimated that the State Ministry of Health was leading the celebration of Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC) which provided an opportunity to reflect on the state’s journey towards the achievement of UHC.
He pointed out that the occasion also presented the opportunity for the state to acknowledge the support of partners in the UHC journey.
The EU and the WHO through the Health System Straightening (HSS) project in Anambra state have contributed immensely in the state’s march towards achieving UHC.
Contributing, the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, Dr Simeon Onyemachi, explained that the programme was aimed at providing healthy citizens, affordable and accessible healthcare to the vulnerable thereby reducing financial burdens and other challenges usually encountered by the beneficiaries.
