Anambra labour leaders urge Governor Charles Soludo to adopt the Federal Government’s template for calculating the new minimum wage. Speaking in Awka, the President of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Anambra, Aromeh, voiced the collective appeal of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and NULGE to use the Federal chart.
Aromeh expressed disappointment with the current proposal, which he claims inadequately addresses salaries for Grade Levels 8 to 17, noting that the governor’s approach could reduce workers’ pay as they advance.
He cited examples where entry-level workers in Grade Level One earn nearly the same as those in Grade Level Eight, describing it as unfair.
Aromeh warned that if the state government continues to differ from the Federal approach, labour unions might consider legal action or an ultimatum. The unions remain hopeful that Governor Soludo, known for his rapport with workers, will prioritize their welfare given the ongoing economic challenges.
