Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, (COOUTH) branch, has appealed to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state to select and appoint its member as the next Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Hospital for effective service delivery to Ndi-Anambra.

MDCAN said for the sake of performance, merit should be the benchmark for appointing Chief Medical Directors in any University Teaching Hospital, be it private or public.

Chairman of the Association, Dr. Chukwudi Onyeaghana Okani, who made the demand in his welcome address during MDCAN’s Annual General Meeting and Award Giving Ceremony, held in Awka, noted that appointment of the Chief Medical Director for the only state owned teaching hospital should be based on merit rather than other extraneous considerations.

He asserted that MDCAN has all it takes to pilot the affairs of the hospital, while appealing to Obiano to give the Association the chance to elect CMD from a team of Medical Consultants for effective performance.

Dr Okani insisted that the consultants are better positioned to take the hospital to greater height because it has all it takes to do so.

He also appealed to the Governor to prioritize the welfare of the MDCAN members in the hospital for greater productivity, urging him to implement the 100 per cent emoluments promised last year instead of the current 70 per cent payment they are receiving in the institution.

According to him, the internally generated revenue (IGR) of hospitals has improved and the emoluments could be achieved through the money from the hospital IGR without much from the government.

Responding, The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, assured the doctors that the present administration of governor Willie Obiano, would do everything healthily possible to address the issue in no distance time.

The Chairman on the occasion and Traditional Ruler of Umueri Community, Igwe Ben Emeka, in his speech, commended the doctors’ efforts in containing the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic in the state.
