As World Malaria Day was marked on 25th April ,2023 Speak Up Africa and its partners have reiterated the urgency to mobilise communities, political leaders and private businesses to develop and support innovative funding initiatives to end malaria.
They said the rising cost of fuel due to COVID-19, and the conflict in Ukraine, are impacting the supply chain, as well as the cost of transport to roll out prevention tools to populations exposed to malaria.
Malaria is a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with the economic burden estimated to be $1.1 billion per year as Nigeria suffers the world’s greatest malaria burden, with approximately 51 million cases and 207,000 deaths reported yearly.The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619,000 in 2021 compared to 625,000 in 2020.
As the globe marked the World Malaria Day (WMD) 2023, yesterday, with the theme: “Time to deliver zero malaria: Invest, innovate, implement”, stakeholders have rallied the government and health parties to a renewed vigour and financing towards ending the scourge.
