ASUU Says It Will Continue Its Strike Until Government Takes a Decision

The Federal Government on Monday inaugurated a seven-member Committee set up to re-negotiate the FG -ASUU 2009 agreement, even though the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) did not send a representative to attend the meeting.

ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had no business attending the meeting expected to renegotiate agreements between the government and university-based unions.

In 2020, former President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, attended the inauguration of the panel chaired by Prof Munzali Jibril which produced the draft proposal of 2009 in May last year, which ASUU is insisting must be signed by the federal government.

The new government team inaugurated on Monday is chaired by Prof. Emeritus Nimi Briggs, Pro-Chancellor, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo.Inaugurating the Panel on Monday, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, charged the committee to come up with proposed draft agreements within three (3) months from the date of inauguration.

The leadership of ASUU also said the ongoing three-week-old nationwide strike will continue until whatever the government wants to do with the agreement is completed and an acceptable implementation commences.

Speaking at the inauguration of the renegotiation committee in Abuja, Mr Adamu said he expected the exercise to be concluded within three months and produce a draft document.
