The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that if public universities are shut down due to industrial action, Nigerians should hold the Federal Government responsible.
ASUU’s Nsukka Zone, in a statement issued today by Zonal Coordinator Raphael Amokaha, emphasized that the union has done everything possible to avert the looming strike, but the government has shown a lack of sincerity in addressing their concerns.
Amokaha recalled the 2022 protracted strike and warned of a similar scenario, citing unresolved issues such as the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement, poor funding of universities, non-payment of allowances, and breaches of university autonomy.
ASUU urged well-meaning Nigerians to lend their voices to resolving these issues, stressing that government agents have been elusive and uncommitted.
The union emphasized that the government must be held accountable for the crisis if forced into industrial action.
