The death of one of the authors of the Nigerian National anthem, Babatunde Ogunnaike has been announced. He was born on March 26, 1956 in Ogun state and died on February 20,2022. He attended the University of Lagos where he graduated with first class honours in Chemical Engineering for his first degree. He went ahead to bag several degrees in various universities. He retired in October 1, 2018 as the dean of the college of engineering at the University of Delaware, USA.
President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the family over his death. The president extolled him for showing his patriotism and dedication to the wellbeing of the nation in the living word that daily reinforce the faith and spirit of Nigerians .
According to reports, he became a co-author of the national anthem after his submission for a competition organized by the federal government called for entries for the new national anthem was chosen.
His entry and that of four others: P.O Aderibigbe, John Ilechukwu, Sota Omoigui and Eme Etim Akpan were combined to form the new national anthem was adopted in 1978.
