The Benue State Police Command has debunked rumours of an alleged massacre of tens of people in Katsina-Ala LGA of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP. ANENE SEWUESE CATHERINE, debunked this in a statement yesterday, after reports surfaced on social and traditional media that about thirty six (36) persons were allegedly killed by herders in the state,
According to the statement, police teams on Friday were deployed to Villages in Michihe Council ward, Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of the state, to ascertain the authenticity
of the news after it broke.
Upon arrival at the Council ward however, the detectives observed that they were no corpses or graves to signify any form of burial and no official reports had been made to the police in the area.
Noting that more police operatives have been deployed to the area for routine patrols and surveillance,
The command urged members of the public to desist from rumour mongering and hate speeches that create unnecessary tension within the state.
Media practitioners were also advised to ensure that they practice investigative journalism to ensure accurate and balanced reporting as this will help the police to channel limited resources to the right places at the right time.
