Statistics have shown that breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, followed by exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond, is ideal for the well-being of mother and child.
Reports also have it that in Nigeria, one in eight children do not reach their fifth birthday, and three in ten children are stunted, due to poor breastfeeding.
The Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Mrs Chioma Ezeanyimulu, disclosed these in view of the Breastfeeding awareness campaign which takes place between first and seventh August.
She commended the UNICEF and World Health Organization, WHO, for continued interventions in promoting the health and well-being of children and women in the State
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week with the theme, “Protect Breastfeeding, A Shared Responsibility”, aims at revisiting commitments made at the start of this year, which include that employers allow women the time and space needed to breastfeed, and give parental Leave, with long maternity leave.
