The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) regarding the potential for flooding in the River Benue basin.
The communication came in a letter from Umar Salisu, the Director of African Affairs at the Ministry, dated August 21. The letter revealed that the government of Cameroon intends to release water from the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River due to substantial rainfall in the dam’s catchment area in Northern Cameroon. The communication emphasized that the dam authorities plan to release water in controlled and small increments to prevent damage along the River Benue basin in both Cameroon and Nigeria. The statement urged NEMA to take proactive measures to mitigate potential damage and to inform residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
