Canada announced on Tuesday that it will follow the United States’ lead in imposing a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. The move, set to take effect on October 1st, also includes a 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum from China.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that these measures are in response to what he calls China’s state-directed policy of over-capacity.

The decision aligns Canada with other economies taking similar actions, including the U.S. and the European Union. Canada is also exploring further tariffs on Chinese semiconductors and solar cells.

The Chinese embassy in Ottawa has yet to comment on these developments. Meanwhile, Tesla’s shares fell over 3% following the news, as the company may need to adjust its logistics and export strategies.
