Canada, on Friday became the latest country to lift its travel ban on Nigeria.

Making the announcement at a news conference, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos stated that the ban was no longer needed as the spread of the Omicron Variant of Covid-19, for which the ban was imposed, is already active in the country.

Adding that pre-arrival negative PCR tests for all travelers will however, be reinstated as of December 21, he reiterated a government warning earlier this week that now is not the time to travel.

The lifting of the travel ban is to take effect from 11:59 pm on Saturday.

Besides Nigeria, the travel restriction on flights was also lifted on South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Namibia, Malawi and Egypt.

Canada has so far recorded nearly 350 cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, while the total average daily Covid case count, has jumped by 45 percent in the past week to about 5,000.
