The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has decried the huge strain put on the country’s foreign reserve by medical tourism.
He made this known on Friday at the launch of a newly built, private-owned health facility located in Ikeja, Lagos.
He lamented that for every 1 billion dollars earmarked for medical tourism, it means less than 1 billion that could be made available to other critical sectors of the economy.
He called on private sectors to invest in medical facilities to improve access to healthcare in the country.
Emefiele said that the CBN will continue to do whatever it can to support healthcare in Nigeria.
The CBN has been supportive to the healthcare sector in terms of medical projects such as, medical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, dental services, eye clinics in both private and public hospitals.
