Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Sector, says a hit-and-run driver whose identity was not captured, knocked down a female adult who was crossing the expressway at Okpoko Junction, Onitsha, yesterday, Wednesday 12 August, 2020.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 8 o’clock in the morning, adding that the vehicle was on top speed and fled after knocking the woman down.
The Anambra Sector Public Education Officer, RC Pascal Anigbo, who disclosed this in a release, also hinted that the victim was rushed in a Tricycle to Toronto Hospital Onitsha by her parents, before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team from Upper Iweka Unit Command, but was confirmed dead.
In another report from Ihiala, the Federal Road Safety Corps revealed that a serious Road Traffic Crash occurred near KM Filling Station, along Ihiala-Onitsha Road.
The State FRSC Sector Public Education Officer, RC Pascal Anigbo, revealed that the road traffic crash which occurred around 8.20 am, involved a Toyota Hiace with enlistment number CAL15XJ and an Actros Tanker with registration number FGG176YU.
According to the Public Education Officer, a total of Fifteen persons, (6 male adults and 9 female adults ) were involved in the crash.
He said ten victims (4 males and 6 females) sustained varying degrees of injuries, though no death was recorded, and added that the injured victims were rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, by FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Unit Command.
Commenting on the road accidents, the Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Anambra State, CC Andrew Kumapayi, again strongly warned road users against crossing the expressways.
He stressed that pedestrians must endeavour to always use pedestrian bridges, to avoid being knocked over by vehicles plying the expressway.
He also warned drivers against speeding, saying they should always drive with common sense speed limits so that they can easily control their vehicles, in the event of any emergency.
According to the Sector Commander, a maximum speed limit of 50km per hour is recommended for cars, within built-up areas.
He condoled with the family of the deceased and wished the injured quick recovery.
