Ajayi Crowther University has announced mandatory drug tests for students, porters, and security personnel following the death of a student allegedly beaten by his colleagues.
The decision, reported by the institution’s alumni executive, comes in response to the tragic incident involving Akpo Alex, a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student.
According to reports, Alex was beaten to death last week over an alleged phone theft. The university’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, stated that anyone found guilty in the drug tests would be expelled or dismissed immediately. This was confirmed in a report by Hon. Busoye Ogunlade, president of the alumni executive.
The report follows a visit by the alumni executive to the university management, where they discussed updates and suggestions in the wake of the student’s death. During the visit, it was revealed that all individuals involved, including the suspected perpetrators, a porter, and two security personnel accused of rape, are in police custody awaiting legal proceedings.
In addition to the drug testing measures, the university has increased security on campus, with civil defence officers now working alongside existing security staff. The parents of the deceased student visited the university and suggested raising awareness among students about proper reporting channels for incidents, rather than resorting to violence.
The alumni executive pledged to work closely with the university management to uphold the institution’s vision and ensure student safety.
