Former Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chemistry Department lecturer, Peter Ekemezie, on Tuesday , received a six-month imprisonment for posting defamatory statements about Prof. Alex Asigbo. Ekemezie, charged with forgery and defamation, was given the option of a N300,000 fine. In his ruling at the Awka Magistrates’ court, His Worship, E.C. Chukwu, considered that Ekemezie had already spent one month in a psychiatric home and four months in a Correctional Centre.
Asigbo testified that Ekemezie forged his signature after Asigbo advised him to get a subpoena instead of a witness statement. This led Ekemezie to publish defamatory content against Asigbo on social media. While Ekemezie’s identity and lecturer status at Unizik were disputed, the institution’s Media Adviser, Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed that Ekemezie left the university due to credential issues several years ago.
