Former lawmaker and social critic, Senator Shehu Sani, has expressed concern over the alleged looting of a warehouse belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, NEMA, by residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Sani described the incident as a dangerous symptom of an impending revolution amidst the current economic hardships facing the country.
Reports indicate that residents of the FCT raided the NEMA warehouse, carting away foodstuffs and other items, reflecting the severity of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria.
The International Monetary Fund, IMF, recently highlighted stalled per-capita growth, poverty, and high food insecurity as contributing factors to the economic challenges in Nigeria, which has led to rising inflation, exchange rate crisis, weak economic growth, and business shutdowns.
Senator Sani warned that such acts of mass looting signify a growing discontent among the populace and underscore the urgent need for measures to avert or contain a potential revolution.
