“The maiden edition of the Onitsha Main Market Traders Football Tournament tagged “Overdose 2021 Tournament” got off to a flying start Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at the Washington Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha.
“The competition is being contested by the different zones that make up the Onitscha main market, which is the largest market in West Africa, and sponsored by an All Progressive Congress, APC, Governorship aspirant in the November 6, Anambra State election, Dr Chidozie Nwankwo, popularly known as Overdose.
“The competition was kicked off by Barr. Ejike Nwachukwu, the DG; Campaign Organization for Dr Chidozie Nwankwo, who was represented by the DG of the Markets, Hon Samuel Ogbonna, who enumerated the sterling qualities of the governorship aspirant and sponsor of the tournament.
“Apeaking to kpakpando reporter, Mr Echezonachukwu ObIdigbo noted that one positive thing that will happen to Anambra State, particularly the youths, will be Dr Chidozie Nwankwo becoming the Governor of Anambra State come November 6, 2021.
According to Ifeanyi Orakwe, also present at the event,
The sponsor has so much love for the youths and loves football and sports in general, and If he becomes governor, sports will be given a new face in the state and youths will find themselves in sporting eldorado.
Hon. Ogbonna also made it clear there were no constraints in the organization of the event, which turned out successful and the sponsor was doing it out of passion, love and effort to get the youths off the streets and give them opportunity to make a career and decent living through sports.
He further disclosed that the tournament was not politically motivated but a continuation of Dr Nwankwo’s interest in football and determination to provide a platform for youths and traders to engage in physical exercise, since all works and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Mr
“No fewer than seven teams are participating in the month long tournament. The teams are drawn from the different zones that make up the famous Onitsha Main Market.
In the opening match on Tuesday, zone 2A came from behind to beat zone 1A 3-5 on penalties after a 1-1 regulation time scoreline.
