Ebonyi State Government Willing To Offer Amnesty To Repentant Criminals

The Ebonyi state government has said it will offer amnesty to bandits and other criminals who are willing to repent and lay down their arms.

This was made known in a statement by the State Commissioner for information and orientation, Uchenna Orji on Friday.

According to the Orji, Governor Dave Umahi, will use any legitimate means to see to the protection of lives and property of residents of the state and the government was ready to get them profiled, rehabilitated and engaged in life transforming empowerment programmes.

Adding that bandits and hoodlums are not totally outsiders, the Commissioner noted that from the history and interaction with those already arrested, it showed that a lot of engagement had to be done with the youths.

Speaking further, the commissioner said the security meetings convened recently by the governor were designed to find solution to the challenges affecting the state and also enhancing effective policing of communities in order to ensure timely alert about security threats and breaches to relevant agencies.

The Eastern Security Outfit, also known as “Ebubeagu,” Ebonyi State branch, has arrested eight armed robbery suspects in the state.

According to Mr Stanley Okoro-Emegha, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Boarder, Peace and Conflict Resolution; in a statement in Abakaliki on Friday, the suspects were arrested at different crime scenes in the state.

One of the suspects, Igwe Paulinus, a native of Ikwo local government area of the state, confessed to the crime, admitting that he had been involved in multiple robberies at popular Meat market in Abakaliki and used to rob people of their phones and money.

According to media reports, the suspects were later handed over to the police for further investigation.

The Commissioner also reiterated that the state government was committed to getting rid of crime in all communities.
