Experts and Residents Raise Alarm Over Abattoir Conditions in Abia and Imo States
Veterinary experts and residents in Abia and Imo States are sounding the alarm over the deplorable conditions of local abattoirs, describing them as unhygienic and substandard.
Veterinarian Nwabueze Ibeneme highlighted critical issues, including the lack of proper facilities for animal resting, inadequate water supply, and poor meat handling practices that could lead to the spread of zoonotic diseases like tuberculosis and salmonellosis.
According to report, butchers have also voiced concerns, with some calling for the relocation of abattoirs situated near burial grounds.
They urge the state government to invest in modern facilities to ensure safer meat processing.
The experts are advocating for more veterinarians to oversee meat inspections, emphasizing the need for improved standards to protect public health.
