The family members of Chinonso Omeh, an indigene of Umuogboagu community, Enugu Ezike, Igbo Eze North LGA, Enugu State, have appealed to the government and other relevant authorities to intervene over the alleged death of their brother, Chinonso, in Police custody in Anambra State.

They said their brother, aged 30, had a car wash centre at Tollgate in Ogbunike, when he was arrested by the police, and that they have tried to know his whereabouts since then, only for police to present them with the corpse of a 70-year-old man in replacement.

The elder brother of Chinonso, Mr Onyebuchi Omeh, who spoke on behalf of the family, alleged that their brother was arrested on February 4, and detained at Ogidi Police Station before he was transferred to the defunct Awkuzu SARS which has been renamed State CID Annex.

He recalled that Chinonso was alleged to have threatened the life of one Austin Izunnwanne, but since then police at Awkuzu denied them access to see him in the cell and even initially denied ever having him in their custody.

According to him, after repeated attempts to see his brother at Awkuzu State CID Annex failed, they wrote a petition to the AIG in charge of Zone 13, Ukpo, Anambra State, through a lawyer and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) at Ogidi was summoned. He then narrated how, when and to whom he handed Chinonso over to at Awkuzu State CID.

Omeh added that when the team from Awkuzu was also summoned to Zone 13 Ukpo, they confessed that Chinonso was in their custody, but slumped in their cell and was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

However, when they requested to see his corpse, they were taken to a private mortuary and shown the corpse of a 70 years old man in place of their brother Chinonso.

He said the last time they had an appointment with the police team investigating the matter at Zone 13, Ukpo, they learnt that the two policemen from Awkuzu, the IPO, Michael Nelson and his team leader known as Big Sam who handled their brother’s matter earlier detained over the case have been released without prosecution.

The family head called on the relevant authorities to press on the police to release their brother whether alive or dead, as well as prosecute those probably found to have contributed to the dastardly act.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 13 Ukpo, Ms Nkiruka Nwode, said he has not been briefed on the extent of the investigation on the matter, and promised to respond once she got the information.
