The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed three milk production factories in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State over alleged violations of acceptable production and hygiene standards.
The enforcement operation, carried out on Tuesday with the support of security operatives, led to the destruction of freshly produced milk found in containers and the confiscation of equipment used in the production process. The owner of one of the factories was also arrested.
Speaking during the raid, the FCCPC South East Zonal Coordinator, Ndidiamaka Obialor, alleged that the dairy products manufactured in the facilities posed serious health risks to consumers due to unhygienic production practices.
According to her, officials discovered that the factories operated in dirty environments, allegedly reused discarded plastic bottles collected from the streets, rinsed them with unclean water, and packaged products without the use of personal protective equipment. She also claimed there was no evidence of water treatment or laboratory testing of the finished products before they were distributed to the public.
Obialor stressed that the commission would not tolerate practices that endanger public health, noting that the FCCPC remains committed to protecting consumers, promoting fair business practices and preventing substandard products from reaching the market.
She warned operators of similar illegal production facilities to comply with established safety and quality standards or face enforcement actions, adding that the commission will sustain its crackdown on producers whose activities threaten the health and safety of Nigerians.
