The Federal Government has confirmed the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by Finnish authorities on charges of terrorism and inciting violence.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement by its acting spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, revealed that Ekpa was detained on November 21 following diplomatic efforts between Nigeria and Finland.
Ekpa, known for declaring a Biafran government in exile, allegedly used social media to spread separatist propaganda and incite violence. Finnish investigators linked his activities to unrest in southeast Nigeria.
The ministry stated that this development is a significant step in addressing IPOB’s activities and mitigating threats to national security.
The Federal Government will closely follow the legal proceedings for further updates.
