The Corp Marshall and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, on Tuesday, flagged off a public awareness campaign known as Mobile Speed Control Campaign to educate motorists plying the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

Oyeyemi, represented by the Anambra State Sector Commander, Mr. Andrew Kumapayi, said the primary purpose of the awareness campaign was to educate motorists on the dangers of driving above the 100kmph speed limit that is constitutionally allowed on Nigerian roads.

He expressed worry over the incessant cases of road accidents recorded on daily basis along the axis, comprising Nkpor, Nteje, Ogbunike, Odumodu, Obosi, Igbariam, Awkuzu and parts of Onitsha.

The FRSC boss pointed out that the campaign was in line with the FRSC operational order to stem the tide of accidents on Nigeria highways.

He added that they were not doing it only for drivers, but also for the passengers who sometimes engage their men in various confrontations for stopping drivers while on top speed and overload, for them to know the danger of driving above the stipulated speed limit, especially on a lone road.

On the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities, the Oyeyemi warned parents traveling with their children for the celebration to avoid night journey, noting that most of the commercial vehicles travelling at night are faulty.

Nteje Unit Commander, Mr. Yakubu Ahmed, while addressing the deployed officers, blamed some of the crash incidents on human factors like over speeding, fatigue, impatience, overloading and insensitivity on the part of drivers.

He noted also that people who defy FRSC repeated caution to use the pedestrian bridge on the highways, also contribute to the increase as they become victims of hit and run motorists while carelessly crossing major roads.

Mr Ahmed warned officers to shun monetary inducement during the awareness campaign for the sake of God and humanity.

About 60 personnel, Rainer gun, vehicles and other road control tools were deployed for the exercise which is expected to end first quarter of 2021.
