Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has reflected on his emotional experience of losing the 2015 presidential election, which marked the first time an incumbent president was defeated in Nigeria. Speaking at the 1st Raymond Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture in Abuja, Jonathan shared that learning of his defeat to Muhammadu Buhari was a deeply challenging moment, making him feel as though “the whole world was against him.”
Jonathan credited Raymond Dokpesi, the late media personality and Chairman of Daar Communications, for his supportive role, noting that Dokpesi’s encouragement after the loss helped him cope, both as he transitioned out of office and in his personal spiritual journey. Jonathan referenced his book, My Transition Hours, which details his post-election reflections and the wisdom shared by elder statesmen like Dokpesi.
Also addressing the event, Minister of Information Idris Mohammed praised Dokpesi as a patriot, emphasizing the importance of responsible media coverage and balanced freedom of speech in Nigeria. He reminded citizens that while criticism is valid, focus should also be placed on national achievements.
Dokpesi, a respected media figure, passed away on May 29, 2023, following health complications. His legacy of nation-building and balanced reporting was celebrated by the DAAR Communications team, who honored his dedication to Nigeria.
