The federal government has been urged to take more proactive measures to tackle the increasing challenges of insecurity across the country.

Speaking in Awka, the National Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene said more security manpower and logistics should be deployed towards fighting insurgency, banditry and herdsmen menace across the country.

Our Correspondent reports that Chief Okeke-Ogene lamented that the spates of kidnaping and violent crimes are adversely affecting socio-economic and political life of the country thereby increasing level of hunger and poverty among the citizenry as well as discouraging investors from exploring opportunities in the country.

He warned that unless decisive action is taken to disarm, arrest and prosecute those who are terrorizing Nigerians and disrupting farming activities, the country would continue to face low productivity in agricultural production and possible food crisis in future.

Chief Okeke-Ogene urged security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities by taking more formidable measures to protect lives and property across the country, stressing that no country can prosper if the defenseless citizens are under constant threat of violence, regretting that this has continued to fuel youth restiveness and tension across Nigeria.

He restated the need for State Governors to be allowed to carry out their constitutional roles as Chief Security Officers of their States without interference and commended Governor Willie Obiano for sustaining effective security network that is promoting stability and conducive atmosphere across the State, urging other Governors to emulate him.

Also speaking, a community leader, Chief John Obiefuna urged the federal government to adopt global best practices in cattle rearing to checkmate incessant invasion of farms and homes by herders as well as investigate sources of arms to bandits, herders and insurgents.
