Valentine’s season is a period to share love and joy and is celebrated in different ways by different people.
Visitation to the sick was how members of Fides Media Staff Welfare Association (FiSWA) chose to commemorate the day.
The hospital visitation by FiSWA, in collaboration with the management of Fides Media group, saw the group pay a courtesy visit to patients at the postnatal and emergency units of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, on Sunday, February 13.
Led by Mr Alexander Adejoh, the chairman of FiSWA, the group prayed with and presented cash gifts to pleasantly surprised patients at the health facility as a means to ease their burden and share the love.
Speaking on the visit, Mr Adejoh, describing the outreach as an embodiment of the real essence of the celebration of the feast of St. Valentine – rather than romantic love alone, noted that although the visit was intended to provide succour to at least 10 patients with a monetary gift of 50 thousand naira, the number of beneficiaries was eventually extended to 13 to accommodate more people.
Adding that the outreach was in synch with the organization’s values as a church establishment, he asserted that it also aligned with the “catholic corporal works of mercy” of visiting the sick, urging all, as well the government to support people in need.
Indicating satisfaction with the turn-up of well-wishers that joined the group for the outreach, a member of the committee, Daku Darwana disclosed that they opted for cash presentations rather than the more commonly considered toiletries because of its multifaceted application in solving the pressing needs of the beneficiaries.
Also speaking on the visit, a volunteer at the outreach, Amarachi, expressed fulfilment at the joy the visit brought to the patients, urging everyone to extend a helping hand to others even if it is just by checking on them.
