On the recent trip of Northern governors to the United States, former Governor Sule Lamido has criticized their choice of engagement, stating it revealed their ignorance of Nigeria’s Constitution. Lamido was Governor of Jigawa state from 2007 to 2015 and a Peoples Democratic Party Chieftain.
Using his Facebook page, Lamido expressed disappointment that the governors focused on security issues, which fall under the Exclusive Legislative List, rather than addressing pressing local matters.
He highlighted the disconnect between their priorities and the everyday challenges faced by citizens, such as lack of infrastructure and poverty. Lamido suggested that the governors could have sought expertise from local institutions such as National Institute For Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru Jos or Administrative Staff College of Nigeria in Badagry or even National Intelligence Agency, NIA.
He said that these three institutions have more than enough materials, essays and templates on the problems on security in Nigeria more than the far fetched American Institute instead of embarking on a costly trip abroad.
He also faulted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NIA for not providing proper guidance. Lamido concluded by lamenting the state of affairs in Nigeria and the challenge of remaining sane in such an environment.
Defending the trip, Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, clarified that the meeting was part of efforts to find a lasting solution to Nigeria’s security challenges through international collaborations.
