Report has it that the overall occupancy rate in the prisons in France is currently 122.8%, and it 146.3% in remand prisons.

The country broke a new record with 74,513 inmates, marking the sixth time it exceeded its previous high number. Despite being severely criticized for overcrowding, the situation remains unchanged.

According to report, the authorities are facing challenges in addressing the issue, especially with the approaching Olympic Games.

Stakeholders have called for urgent prison regulation mechanisms, but no significant progress has been made so far.

Equally, short sentences and time spent in detention have increased over the last thirty years.
